A glimpse into the private Headquarters of the Gendarme.

The Gendarme of Echoes

The Detention & Administrative Complex: Their precinct is a massive, multi-purpose metaphysical correctional facility. It is a "living bureaucratic organism" where the walls might shift on their own, and if a wall files a complaint against you, it is considered legally binding. The complex features holding cells tailored to specific crimes, houses the infamous Public Pit, and deliberately maintains a strict ambient temperature of "mild disappointment".

Treaty of Ink and Men

Law written in star-iron, breath, grief, and resonance.

The walls shift. The records remember. Even silence has jurisdiction.

Lines of Jurisdiction

The Atherian Canon Laws are obsessively specific, meaning jurisdiction is determined by the exact nature of the resonance disruption rather than just the location of the crime. If the state of emergency Protocol is declared by the 8 houses, and Resonance Accord, then all Gendarmes get global jurisdiction until the emergency or catastrophe is subverted or resolve. I // Civic Guard

Petty crimes with deadly sincerity

Thunderclap entrances, unsolicited whistling, aggressive cutlery, and public nuisance are handled with silver-piped precision and citation pads drawn like blades. They enforce the Douchebag Prohibition Laws against those committing crimes against the vulnerable or acting like bullies. They are the ones dragging people to the "Hall of Judgment and Pettiness" to resolve minor complaints. The Civic Guard handles the sheer, unadulterated annoyance of the Atherian public: They are the beat cops, the "meter maids" of reality, and the frontline enforcers of the Petty Crimes Decrees. Because minor crimes destroy resonance, the courts handle them more aggressively.

II // Watchers

Concealed intent and shadowed truth

Their Mandate: To observe, interpret, and investigate metaphysical ambiguity, Flow anomalies, and major resonant dissonance. When malice hides beneath manners, when smuggling, espionage, or death enters the room, the Watchers descend with fog, silence, and ferrets. The Rootmother River carries the world's memory, the Watchers maintain a dedicated division simply known as Riverwatch. Operating up and down the riverbanks and out of outposts like the disguised boathouse in Veilford, Riverwatch investigators are specifically assigned to handle river crimes, ferry incidents, and any official testimony linked to the Rootmother herself. They are the ones who monitor the river's shifting currents to see if a localized tragedy is causing the water's resonance to buckle.

III // Wardens

Architecture as testimony

Wardens are trained to enforce the Statute of Integrity in Form. They learn that bad craftsmanship is not a mistake; it is a lie told in wood and steel. Collapsed walls, spite-iron beams, and bad craftsmanship become legal lies. The Wardens prosecute structural betrayal with tuning forks and resonance mauls. The are trained to identify which beam was secretly forged with unstable "Spite-Iron" or "Lazy Magic" just by listening to the dissonance.

IV // Agisters

The ecology remembers

This arm acts as the environmental and agricultural authority of the Gendarme. The Grand Agister oversees ecological laws, agricultural licensing, and the strict creature protection guidelines across the continent. Harmed sanctuary creatures, illicit crops, soil-breath theft, and broken agricultural law fall under the Fold, where punishment roots into the earth itself. At the farms, they oversee the day to day operations. They conduct performance reviews, authorize job details, any new programs and incentives. They approve sentence reductions and early releases.

Every criminal holds a piece of the truth; we just need to coax it into the open.
Wavaren Saltmere // First Agister's Clerk
Founding

Wavaren Saltmere enters the record

A tide-runner lawyer with constellation cracks and probability magic, he argued ethical training into the very bones of the Gendarme and helped make Tonal Ethics mandatory for all recruits. Concerning Mustelids and their legal authority.

Wavaren & Sir Monocle Esquire: A Meeting Shortly after becoming an official founder, Wavaren, realized early on that "false witness travels in human shape, and deceit often arrives perfumed, groomed, titled, and smiling". They knew the Gendarme needed a creature that was "quick of nose, obstinate of conscience, and often offensively correct". Wavaren was that officer that happened by chance to not only discover the world's greatest creature, he founded the Agister's Arm and co-wrote the Misdeed Ferret's Charter" They each made a companion for life. Sir Monocle Esquire is recognized

In the hunt for a murderer, Wavaren discovered what the law needed most: a creature quick of nose and offensively correct. Out of this came the Misdeed Ferret Charter.

Curse

High-Sentinel Vaelia breaks the line

From decades of petty crimes, ridicule, revisions, and syrup-sticky indignity, Vaelia leaves behind the maple allergy, the severance sensitivity, and the institutional crankiness that haunt every Gendarme after her.

The Detention & Administrative Complex

A living bureaucratic organism in the Respite, with tailored holding cells, renaming chambers, the Public Pit, and an ambient temperature magically fixed at mild disappointment. It is the trunk to which every branch returns. Even the walls can file complaints, and the law takes them seriously.
