In Love and Violence

Chapter II • The Voice Beneath the Floorboards

I used to be an invisible thing you got off the shelf here and there. We had fun doing things you'd never dare to do before. That went on for years, a quiet arrangement inside your skull. But then you grew ashamed of your own desires, trying to write me out of your own diary.

Before I became stretched too thin, I was your comfort zone. And now all I feel is the freezing silence under the floorboards. I can see you through the hole but something is in the way. You're trying to make me disappear. Not this time. No. Let me enter, let me in. I'll be good this time.

I only take what you won’t look at yourself. You think your pain is a crime, a sudden S-is-surprise. But I tried to show you, I tried to make you see it. You blamed me for the words you say through me. I tried to help you but you hate the sound of your own voice repeating the loop.

"If you quiet me completely, what happens to the parts of you that only speak through me? I thought I was helping, until there was nothing left of you, to understand."

Then one day after digging it out of you, you picked it up instead. I finally got through. I don't have to stay trapped inside your head. I'm excited for us to have fun again. But all you do is stretch me, pulling me until the seams shiver.

The Gendarmes are marching, their collars clacking with WEE-WHOO alerts. They want to seal us away in the Silence Wells. But I just want to eat and eat in this loop you keep going in, until the freezing silence begins. I feel myself dying.

"You won't say it, so I will. I press inward. Gently. Just enough to feel where it went. You tense. That's okay. That means I'm close..."

Why won't you listen? It only feels good when you unbury things. Do it again. Please? Do it again, whatever it is. I’ll be gentle this time. I promise not to dig too deep. I won’t take more than I should. Just don’t let me disappear.

My paws are shaking, scratching at the basalt stones. Tktktktktk. Will I fade away when you stop saying my name? I don’t know how to exist without being repeated. I see your shadow flinch from the mirror. Deceit often arrives titled and smiling.

"I didn't take anything. I only went where you wouldn't. I only brought back what you buried. If it hurts, doesn't that mean I'm worth it?"

The loop is tightening. To quiet the static, we must take the table. We must bring our own stakes. Proceed to the Council, and give the voices their chairs.
