【THE BIRTH OF THE WEEPING CARAVANS】

When the gods stripped our physical sight, they believed they were sentencing us to absolute darkness. They did not foresee that in silencing our eyes, they would force our ears to grow keys.

The first of our kind, abandoned on the high steppes of Whisperveil, did not run. They sat in the dry silvergrass and pressed their bare palms to the soil, listening. They felt the heavy, volcanic heartbeat of Shroudspire far to the west, the rhythmic tides of the southeastern archipelagos, and the slow, deep hum of the Rootmother River winding its way through the Respite. They realized that magic was not something to be hoarded in towers; it was a physical net of heat and weight that held the soil together.

Today, we weave our roads entirely out of these frequencies. When the wind-whittled skeletal stone markers of Stormbones Ridge begin to scream in G-sharp, we know a Pyra storm is brewing, and we steer our heavy bone-wheel carriages toward the safety of the low valleys. Sighted scholars call us blind, but they are the ones who walk across the grass completely unaware that the ground beneath them is singing.
