The Truth about Guilds
Suspended in the sprawling boughs of the Great Tree, the guilds believe (they dont), that they run the infrastructure, arts, and cold wars of the continent. Not only are they stuck in the branches because of their poor attitudes, where only the Philosophers permitted to leave, they do not even realize they're stuck. If only they would compromise. They almost destroyed the world when they were given any sort of real power. They were stripped and power was given to the benevolent and loving albeit unhinged and exhausting, High Shenanigan which always has her grumpy but faithful assisstants The Menance and Wynter Sunshine helping her. Though she much prefers to let the citizens of Atheria govern themselves so long as the Treaty of Ink and Men is upheld. All powers listed below are a side effect of hallucinatory ego inflation from having entirely too much audacity.
🛠️ Civic Duty Guilds (Service & Infrastructure)
A Word From The Council of Civic Duties:
“We are the Council of Civic Duty, a table of guildmasters bound not by banner or bloodline, but by the stubborn belief that Atheria should remain survivable. The Radiant Tribunal travels down from its Solari halls of light and law; the Foundation Keepers come dusted in stone; the Golden Road Concord arrives road‑worn and rumor‑rich; the Plow and Sun send whoever can be spared from the fields; and the Oathborne stand, because sitting makes them look too much like officials. We do not rule. We maintain. We argue over grain tithes, broken bridges, caravan routes, vigil‑rights, and what must be remembered when the powerful would prefer forgetting. On good years, our work is invisible. On bad years, we are the last thin line between neglect and collapse.”
⚖️ The Radiant Tribunal
“We are the Radiant Tribunal, last keepers of law in a land frayed by cowardice and convenience. When crowns fail and merchants look away, our scales do not. Bring us your grievances, your broken contracts, your dead who were denied justice. We will weigh deed against consequence in the light of oathstone and starfire, and whatever that light reveals, we will name aloud.”
🛡️ The Oathborne (Heroes Guild)
Heroes Guild: “We are not knights of any court, nor soldiers of any crown. We are the Oathborne. Each of us carries a vow sharper than any blade: guard this village, hunt that beast, see this child safely to the city gates. We wear no uniform, only the marks of the promises we have survived—and the ones we have not yet kept. Hire us if your need is honest. If it is not, then pray some other fool answers your call.”
🧱 The Stone Work (Masonry Guild)
“Look to the roads beneath your feet, the arches over your head, the bridges that do not fall in the night. That is our handwriting. We are the Foundation Keepers, masons of stone and span. Kings redraw borders and generals change uniforms, but our work outlasts their banners. Honor your oaths and maintain your walls, and you will never notice us. Fail at either, and you will meet us in the ruins.”
🌾 Plow & Sun Alliance
Farmers Guild: “Cities hoard coin and crowns hoard glory; we hoard seeds. We are the Plow and Sun, stewards of furrow and field. We watch the skies, mend the soil, and speak softly with the seasons so that others may eat loud and thoughtless. Forget us if you must, but remember this: when the granaries run dry, it will not be courtiers you come begging, but us.”
⚕️ The Circle of Mercy
“A tranquil healing enclave built around a great-rooted tree whose waters are said to remember every recovery. Here, ritual mending, fungal treatments, and long convalescences are guided by strict cycles of care, from spore-cleansing to sap-infused restoratives for the deeply worn. Hospice, Home care, on land and by river. Plague or births, mobile and nearby. We heal the living and help the dead pass. Transnational field medicine, specialized ritual mending, and secret contracts dealing with the mystical Rootmother water rites."
The Golden Road Concord:
“If it moves along the Golden Road, we have a hand on its reins. We are the Golden Road Concord: caravan masters, innkeepers, route‑scribes, and rumor‑mongers. We know which wells are poisoned, which passes are watched, and which toll collectors can be bargained down. Travel under our banners and the road itself will rise to meet you. Travel without us, and may your map be kinder than the world.”
Hearthbound Compact:
Works alongside: The Golden Road Concord. The Concord moves caravans and maintains official wayhouses. Hearthbound enforces the hearth‑contract and hospitality codes. Some inns belong to one, some to both. They are a road-spanning network of inns that doubles as the safest place to hide, trade rumors, and set traps. Outwardly they are, a respected hospitality guild that sets standards for: traveler mediation (no blood on the threshold), fair prices, safe stables, good food and clean rooms. What they are quietly, is a soft-power intelligence and logistics network. They control: who gets a bed, if and when the roads are dangerous, what news spreads, and how fast, which strangers get watched, and which pursuers lose the trail. The Quiet Spoke Inn is quiet, cozy, and innocuous that acts as their headquarters.
