THE FIRST RITE: THE UNVEILING

【THE UNVEILING OF CONCEALMENT】

The river hears what the tongue conceals. Here the soul is brought before what it hid, softened, denied, performed around, or disguised as virtue. No lie survives still water for long.

The dead are not first judged by what they did, but by whether they can bear to hear themselves clearly. When a soul reaches the Vein Beneath the World, whether by death or death of the self, the Keepers of Serisyn do not first ask what the soul achieved. They do not ask what station it held, nor what name it bore among the living.

They ask instead that the soul be made still. The lantern is lowered. The black-water bowl is uncovered. The silver mask is turned face-down. And when the Head Keeper speaks, all listen.

Do not answer quickly. The river has patience enough to hear what you were before you learned to speak. Can you hear what is in you still begging not to be seen? At this, no judgment is yet given. For the first office of Serisyn hands down not condemnation. Only witness.
