When Destiny Was Stolen:


Rinai Tidemaela, a Tide-Runner living in Port Hush, was in a desperate situation. After work, he took the carriage back to Giltway City to push luck, he had hoped, far enough in his favor. He had tried nudging all the luck that would listen at the port casino the night before. Aria wasn’t listening, and he ended the evening with a lost paycheck. Now he was back, hoping to win it all back plus some more.

With his ninth child on the way, he needed a win. A big one at that. Work had slowed down, and even if it hadn't, he’d barely be scraping by. He was stupid last night, making weak bets with impossible chances. The Twins laughed at him a little louder after each loss. Today, he was better prepared. The runes that morning had been ambiguous, but they held an air of optimism as they tumbled onto the cloth. He gave an offering of his best shells to Aria at dawn. He carried favor-runes in his pocket and tried to read Syric’s threads, watching what they might weave. But the strands hid from him tonight. He almost decided to turn around and head home.

As he spun on his heel toward the door, there stood Theois, his Unseeing coworker and regular gambling buddy. Theois had never touched games of chance until Rinai roped him in at a tavern with a pool table and a jug of Mulberry wine. Rinai thought he had found an easy mark. He had not. From that day on, Theois was hooked, and the two became fast friends. Tonight, Theois wanted to place a wager.

Now, Tide-Runners didn't bet on ordinary marks. They bet with lucky sea glass charms inherently infused with Aria's luck and woven with Syric's fate-threads. Each piece yielded a certain measure of good fortune that was already rightfully yours; you simply received it faster. How much and for how long remained random, but you always received something. The glass would hum softly and glow with faint light; when the luminescence died, you set it on Aria's shrine for a day or two to recharge. It was small magic, the carriage waiting an extra second at the curb, or a minor promotion falling into place. Rinai often sold them to outsiders for twice their worth, but he was a desperate man with a lot of mouths to feed. 

Tonight’s wager was immense. If Rinai won, he could clear his debts entirely, letting his family breathe easy for a while. The two men mostly bet on people, not tables. Theois picked a mark, betting on whether Rinai could “nudge” them into specific actions, bets, or blunders. Tonight was especially risky because it relied on multiple people riding the waves of conversation. More people meant more variables, higher odds of failure, and a much steeper payout. Of course, Rinai took it. The conditions were simple which didn't mean easy, just uncomplicated. Across the pub sat a high-collared Vesperalith scholar in the head seat with four drinking companions. Rinai had to nudge the room until the leader said to each of his four friends in a corrective tone,  "Well, actually..." with each friend undoubtedly in the wrong, and all within three hours. Theois wagered the scholar wouldn't manage to correct all four, especially using that exact phrase Tonight, Theois had brought real collateral: a clinking purse of silver and three brilliant, cobalt-blue sea glass charms, fully charged, humming like trapped bees. To an Unseeing, the glass charms brought him luck sure, but he couldn't sway its course like Rinai could. And to Rinai, with nine mouths to feed and an empty pantry, they were salvation.

"Four corrections. That's four 'Well, actually's,'"Theois murmured, nodding toward the booth where the high-collared Vesperalith sat holding court. "Three hours on the clock. If you can nudge the room into making all four of his friends look like idiots, the glass and the coin are yours.” Theois’s tone carried genuine doubt, and he didn't bother hiding it. That doubt only fueled Rinai's confidence. Theois let his pitch rise just a hair at the end, a tell Rinai knew well. The doubt wasn't for Rinai. Though, this should have been impossible if it were any other race. But for a Vesperalith, being a ‘know it all’ wasn't a habit, it was a personality trait the lot of them share. Rinai grinned, thumbed his own dimming charm, and reached for the first thread. 

The first setup was effortless. The group bickered constantly over music, so Rinai directed his intent toward the tavern stage, heavily stacking the odds that the house band would cover a popular Musical Mycelians track. Just as the threads caught his weave, the pub door swung wide. A cold draft whipped through the room, cutting straight into Rinai like it needed his skin for warmth. He shook it off. He had two months of wages on the line, he had no time for superstitious hesitation. Tide-Runners didn't just spend their luck early; they could peer into the sea glass and see what fortune had in store. The truly skilled could actively haggle with the glass, convincing luck to flow where they directed. Rinai believed himself more than skilled enough.

The first three practically gave Rinai the win. As soon as the cover band began the chorus, stumbled into the opening bars of "I Wanna Join Your Fruiting Circle," butchering the rhythm. Which of course, sparked the argument over original performances, Rinai could almost anticipate the words before they spoke them. That first, "Well, actually, the band didn't pronounce it like that, it's 'Ruh-zow-bee-uh’ not 'Ree-zoo-bee-uh’." One down. A moment later, a passing server jostled the table, spilling red wine. Instead of helping mop the mess, the scholar spent three straight minutes smugly identifying the exact vintage and the ruined harvest year that produced it. Two down. For the third, an argument ensewed over the philosophical difference between a cover song and a rendition. One claimed, renditions were respectful and required talent, the other was child's play. Rinai barely had to convince the sea glass at all; he just gave the ambient threads a polite twitch, and the “Well actually, neither of your arguments have anything to do with philosophy” basically fell out of the Vesp's mouth. Three of four, with thirty minutes left on the glass, and Rinai was flying on borrowed air. The raw, electric thrum of Syric’s weave felt light beneath his fingertips.

"Double it," Rinai muttered, his chest puffed, sliding his own dwindling stack of worn glass into the center of the scarred wooden table. 
"Double the purse. He's going to say it,  Theois. I can feel it."
"Careful, Rinai. The sea doesn't like being told which way to crest." He warned, sliding the extra silver forward anyway.
Across the pub, the fourth friend, a quiet, nervous guy that looked out of place next to the others. He'd been fiddling with his pocket watch all evening and now stood up abruptly throwing his overcoat on.
“I'm off fellas, 'ferry's about to take off and I can't afford to miss it again.”
“Aw man, off so soon, you just got here” one slurred at him, six ales deep and bumbling.
"We've been here almost three hours, Vaelar. You've had too many," the boy replied, buttoning his collar. 
"Besides, if I'm not at the pier before the whistle blows, Maelira won't wait. She won't be there when I arrive, either. That’d make it three times in a row."
"That last time wasn't your fault! That Solari was blinding everyone on the quay!"   

He opened his mouth to reply but decided against it and turned to leave. Rinai couldn't lose, he was so close and had risked everything. He reached for his sea glass. It was dull and no hum came from the swirls within. It had been completely spent. There was no luck left in the pub to borrow. His racing and sweat began beading on his forehead. Panicked, Rinai threw caution aside. Through the smoky air, a brilliant silver cord drifted before his spiritual sight. Begging to be pulled, teasing almost. In an act of desperation, he reached past the fading threads of probability and clinched his bare hand around the thickest part of the strand that anchored itself to the man's life. A thread of fate, bound with purpose to a young woman waiting two miles away under an iron lamppost, exhausted from wondering if the love of her life would ever put her first. Rinai hesitated, for a moment, then closed his eyes, gripped the cord and yanked.

When he opened his eyes, he exhaled sharply, relieved this was over, he won. He watched when suddenly, the man turned back towards the booth with a sudden, unexplainable urge to argue about the Solari encounter. 

"Well, actually..." the Vesperalith man sneered right on cue.
Rinai won the bet. And two miles away, beneath an iron streetlamp the air wet with mist, a girl waited until the clock struck twelve, gave up, turned away into the dark, and walked out of the boy's life forever. 

It took but mere moments and the silver strand was severed. The tavern felt the shift in resonance, so did Rinai, he tried ignoring it but couldn't shake it. High above the mortal plane, Syric felt the snap ripple through his tapestry. Infuriated by the breach, the god dispatched his celestial envoy, Nytheria, to locate the frayed cord and mark the thief. Nytheria descended upon the fog-veiled ridges above Giltway, braiding a severe, unforgiving thread into Rinai’s mortal pattern. At the same time, the senior Tide-Runners who run the Fate-Theft Reporting Bureau, not bothering to check the celestial weather report, and guided by Nytheria, flagged the anomaly and dispatched the Shardborn Officers instantly. They forcefully inject high-intensity geometric frequencies to hold the immediate area making it stable. Rinai scrambled to reach for an exit, but a Shardborn Warden got to him before he could and snapped a Dissonance Binding onto his wrist, immediately cutting off any last lingering drops of his magical flow. 

Stunned, Rinai Tidemaela is dragged to the local precinct of the Gendarme of Echoes, a massive metaphysical facility kept at a strict ambient temperature of "mild disappointment". The exhausted Civic Guard burns a temporary ash rune into the Rinai's record tracking his resonance fluctuations while the day's planetary alignments are audited. Rinai, uncomfortable and frantic, tried to have the iron cuffs that were pinching his wrists loosened. Being ignored he grew more and more upset and began yelling at the top of his lungs. 

“Hey, is anyone gonna listen to me?! I'm in pain over here!” The intake clerk, already annoyed, has it logged as "Aggressive Phonetic Dissonance," they tacked on an immediate, unappealable Snack Fine and he languishes in the cell for three days before they hear his case. It gets pushed to the Vespralith Halls of Judgment and the trial takes place in the Stillness Chamber, keeping his resonance dampened and magic frozen. Fate-Theft is a High Crime in Atheria, carrying no mercy the court's verdict is swift. Rinai Tidemaela, is then rendered Luck neutral for life for severing threads from the tapestry of Syric. No more sea glass. No more nudges. No more favorable coin flips, the carriage wouldn't just happen to be there when he ran late. Because the universe no longer cared whether he lived or died, he was enrolled in the Luck-Neutral Safety Net. A safety net of pity for those like him.  Yet his troubles were far from over. There was still the restitution to deal with. To repay his massive "Conservation Debt" to Atheria. He tried to beg the courts for mercy but those pleas fell on deaf ears. The Grand Agister sentences him to three months at the Husbandry Wellness Centers. Rinai is handed a 20-gallon bucket and must haul water from the lower well to the mountain ridge without the aid of magic or luck.

He returned home to Port Hush blistered, bruised, and thoroughly stripped of his pride. His wife met him on the porch. She was furious, exhaustingly disappointed, and holding baby number nine on her hip. But after she made him sleep in the shed for three nights, she brought him a bowl of broth, kissed the salt-crust on his forehead, and told him to stop being an idiot. They stayed together. Over the years, they had three more children, filling the modest house to the rafters. Rinai vowed he'd never touch a shiny shard of sea glass or bet on anything ever again. He traded the wild waters for dry earth, spending the rest of his long days tending a quiet, regular turnip/beet farm, where the rain arrived precisely half of the time, and the vegetables grew predictable, and with uninspired mundanity.
