The Mapmaker's Lost Notebook

Classification: Autonomous Ink // Auto-Redacted

If you are reading this verse, the thread has already re-aligned. I wrote these lines before my name was dissolved into the Underwell, hiding the script from my own eyes so I would not prematurely rush into Elsewhere and be utterly consumed. Do not seek out the surface structures if your shadow has begun to walk with an independent heartbeat. The Giltway clerks will only offer you an accountant's trial, but the Void does not bargain with clipboards.

"The scratching starts; it's gentle at first; you hardly notice...
Then it tears into your skin; burrowing deep!
It feeds until it pops.
A gnawing in the ears that stays its welcome plus some more."

I. The Anatomy of the First High

We miscalculated the nature of the dark. The Void was not born from a corrupted seed; it was born out of an unchecked indulgence of sensation. Arenox, our ancient silhouette of ache, let the pressure slip just enough for his shadow to slide forward like a lover uncurling beneath warm sheets. He mistook the resulting stillness for peace, completely unaware that his craving opened a thin, trembling tear where the too-much could leak out into the expanse.

II. Admonition Against the Secret Repetitions

Guard therefore the hidden fixations of the body. What is denied will deepen beneath the speech layer, and what is given enough secrecy will learn your posture and practice your name in the dark. When your own reflection looks back at you with an anticipatory smile, do not hide in solitude. Go to running water. Request to be kept under watch. It is infinitely better to be seen in your raw weakness than to be met in secret by what your weakness has grown.

"The wind laments his loss today; The sky runs out of ink
That's the ear worm's price you pay
For trying not to think."

III. The Handoff

The light at the edge of the world is turning unevenly now. Vaessa has descended into the subterranean fissures to undergo a long, silent repair with her light-bound counterpart, and the world is starting to misremember its own definition. The river is trying to teach me how to tie knots out of the frayed edges of reality. If you mean to follow the currents from the headwaters down to Seraphyne's tide-pools, you must look closely at what you have buried under the rugs.

IV. The Hymn of the River (Unroll Full Entry)

Before the mouth, before the name, before the branch of blood and bone, there was a sound without shame, singing in the vast and all alone. No hand could hold it, no soil took its seed, no shore could bind its silver tide. It broke itself in mercy’s need and cast its chords through time and light's stride.

So we were scattered into breath, into longing, grief, and fire, each a tone the whole heart loosen, each a string of one desire. We are notes in the river song, brief and burning, carried long. What seems broken still belongs, every voice becomes the song. We are drops the deep sea knew, echoed out in me and you. Though we wander, though we part, one same music threads the dark

I thought my sorrow was my own, a private wound, a sealed room. Then I heard your weeping move like my grief in a borrowed tune. I thought love was only this, one small hand against the cold. Then the silence answered back with a harmony older than the soul.

The River Hymn of Many Notes Before we were names, we were breath in the Song. Before we were bodies, we trembled in light. The One became many, not from lack, but from longing, that each note might sound and return.
No voice is alone in the hearing of water. No grief is solitary beneath the Rootmother’s tide. What is sung apart is not sung outside. What is broken in time remains held in the hymn. So let me be true in my sounding. Let me be gentle in dissonance. Let me remember, when silence grows wide, that the silence is full of the others. For we are not lost, only scattered. We are not ended, only carried. We are not single, though we sing singly. We are the River remembering itself in parts.

Every loss became a chord, every choice a trembling line, every life a sounding thread pulled through hidden hands of time. We are notes in the river song, brief and burning, carried long. What seems broken still belongs, every voice becomes the song. We are drops the deep sea knew, echoed out in me and you. Though we wander, though we part, one same music threads the dark.

If I am only one small note, let me ring the truest I can. If you are near, then sound through me, if you are far, still sing I am. If the river takes my name, let it keep the shape of me. Not erased, but gathered in to the hymn beneath the sea.

We are notes in the river song, never lost though lost so long. All our fractures, all our wrongs, bend at last toward the song. We are voices passing through, ancient light made briefly new. And when one heart learns to hear, all the hidden choirs draw near. I am a note the river borrowed. I am a mouth inside the hymn. I thought the silence stood between us. Now I hear you singing in it.

“Do not come to me asking which part of you must die. That is a question asked when you are too frightened to see the hurt. Ask instead: Which part of me has been left outside so long it learned to enter through the wall? Which part of me sits too near the fire? Which part of me have I mistaken for my ruler? When it was only ever meant to ring the bell?”

“Listen carefully. Fear is not evil. It is a guard animal. But it is a poor architect. Anger is not evil. It is fear in iron. Useful at the gate. Disastrous on the council. Grief is not evil. It is love with nowhere to set the table. Shame is not evil. It is the terror that tenderness may be answered with exile. Envy is not evil. It is longing that has grown embarrassed and mean. So give each thing its proper chair. Hear it. Name it. Bound it. Thank it, if thanks are due. Contradict it, if contradiction is mercy. But do not let every frightened voice draft law in your name. Give it a seat, if you must. Never give it the chair.”

IV. The Uneven Lantern (Unroll Full Entry)

"She was never the sun," Mottle would say later, licking a stray ink-blot from his paw. "The sun is arrogant. The sun demands you look. "Vaessa was merely the hand that turned the lantern so the shadow knew where to sleep."

"I am writing the wet parts, Tavrin. The parts where the shadow grew long and tasted like salt."
"Those are tears Mottle."
"Tears are important."
"So are dates." Tarvin sighed, weary of Mottle's emotional outpour, took over the telling.
"Dates are just tears with numbers."
"That's right Mot"

The Fragment of the Turn:

When Arenox walked into the gray margins of Elsewhere, he did not run. There were no chains in the junk drawer of the cosmos. There was only the heavy, resonant echo of almost-finished things. He heard a weeping that sounded precisely like his own pulse, and because he did not know how to witness a wound without bleeding into it, the gray margins simply ate him whole.

When the Empathy of the world followed him into the dark, she forgot to bring the light. She only brought the turn. And the world, left unturned, grew very cold, and very quiet, and forgot how to care.

The pattern never changes. The water is rising. Remember who you are.
